Looking for holiday gifts that don't come out of a cookie-cutter? Our community boasts a wealth of local artisans and small businesses making one-of-a-kind gems. With so much talent right at our doorstep, we decided to put together a holiday shopping guide featuring a few of our favorite area businesses. We hope you'll shop locally to help you find the unique gifts you seek.
Besides, the past few years have been especially hard for small businesses. If you're like us, you agree it's important to support them as much as possible. And the holidays offer you such an easy opportunity to do so and find somebody that perfect present.
We love our local retailers, so it was hard to choose just a few. Those listed here had more than a few great gift ideas, and many have e-commerce sites so you can order your Hudson Valley craftwork no matter where you live.
We hope you enjoy it!
When you walk into Cocoon, you immediately get the sense you're going stumble upon that perfect something for your loved ones (or that thing you absolutely need that you didn't even know you needed). We are crazy about their selection of local ephemera, but they also carry other cool stuff like thematic gift bundles. There's a David Bowie Bundle, a Foodie Bundle, and even a "Mom" or "Dad" Bundle. If you can't decide, it's easy to grab a gift card and let your friend pick their own favorite thing.
This boutique has been a small business fixture in New Paltz for over 40 years, and it's easy to understand why. First, you can find gifts for that special person in your life who is passionate about fair trade clothing and jewelry, made-in-the-USA artisan-crafted gifts, and amusing toys. Handmade and More offers everything from stocking stuffers to main attractions. There's a lot you can browse through, but don't worry if you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, Melinda Minervini and her staff are full of suggestions, have an encyclopedic knowledge of their inventory, and love to answer questions.
Huguenot Street is the heart of New Paltz and full of historic homes - some dating back to the 1600s. It contains over 30 buildings including the stone-built DuBois Fort, where you'll also find the innovative Huguenot Street Museum and Shop. With the feel of a boutique or antique home, the time inside flies when you're gazing through unique local interest and artisan gifts, from fine art and jewelry to books and educational toys. We really love the map-making kit for kids, but you never know what you're going to find in this special place! Proceeds go towards the preservation of historic buildings and artifacts.
Location: 81 Huguenot Street, New Paltz, NY 12561
As a humane and sustainable family-run farm, we see a kindred spirit in Lovewild Design. This daughter-mother-grandmother team of crafters makes sustainable home goods, gift boxes, and paper products. Think low-waste bath and body, fragrant candles, and responsibly made food products like tea. You'll also find books full of ideas for kids to play outdoors. Though based in New York City and Woodstock, New York, you can find their selection of crafts in over 25 different states. Or, even easier, you can order from their full collection directly via their website.
Have a serious artist in your life? Ask what they want, and you're sure to find it at this artist shop in New Paltz. Have a painting or photograph you need framed? Bring it by, and they'll help you find the perfect one to surprise your loved one. But even if those aren't your options, you can still find a gift befit for that budding artist in your life in their gift section. You may not find a thousand different options, but if you know someone who loves to create, you can assemble a few fun ideas for them with the creative games and puzzles here.
Reading is an important part of Karl Family Farms, and this independently owned bookstore is the source of many of the pages we all turn. Whether it's mom and dad or the little ones, everyone loves getting lost in their aisles full of books. We're lucky enough to have this extraordinary wonderland of words just a few clicks away, but they also have an online store that's just as easy to use as Amazon, if not more.
For your friends with exquisite taste in decor and a love of the natural world, there's Clover and Creek, in Kingston and Hudson, New York. It's an artisan general store that specializes in handmade home, art, and apothecary goods inspired by nature. Everything inside the store comes from the hard work of an artist, maker, or creator of some ilk. If you know someone who takes pride in their home or conscientious provisions, you have a good chance of finding something for them there. And if you're too nervous to bite on just one thing, they make it easy with gift cards.
